The mission of the Florida Natural Areas Inventory is to collect, interpret, and disseminate ecological information critical to the conservation of Florida's biological diversity. FNAI's database and expertise facilitate environmentally sound planning and natural resource management to protect the plants, animals, and communities that represent Florida's natural heritage.

Species and Communities

FNAI builds and maintains a comprehensive database of the location and ecological status of rare plants, rare animals, and high-quality natural communities. Our website includes a Biodiversity Matrix Map Server, Field Guides to the Rare Species of Florida, a Butterfly Photo Gallery and more.

Conservation Lands

FNAI is the primary source for information on Florida's conservation lands. Our database includes boundaries and statistics for more than 1,900 federal, state, local, and private managed areas.  Examples include National parks, state forests, wildlife management areas, and local and private preserves.

Florida Forever Planning and Analysis

FNAI provides scientific support to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection for Florida Forever, the world’s largest environmental land acquisition program. FNAI maintains boundaries, provides scientific review and conducts comprehensive natural resource analysis and scoring for all Florida Forever projects.

Invasive Species

An essential component of protecting Florida's unique biodiversity is bringing under control invasive non-native species.  FNAI develops and maintains the Florida Invasive Plants Geodatabase, a project designed to map terrestrial invasive plant species on all public lands.

Environmental Review

Public agencies and private firms submit projects for environmental review to identify important natural resources in need of protection.  Requests for information also come from non-profit groups, schools and citizens from around the state and nation for an average of more than 1,000 requests each year.
