Climate Change and American Lobsters by Defenders of Wildlife
Global warming has put the American lobster into a predicament, but not directly because of rising temperatures. They do prefer colder waters, but rising temperatures may be turning northeastern waters into a haven for foreign creatures like sea squirts.
Some varieties of sea squirts unseen in these waters just a few decades ago have lately established bloblike colonies covering huge swaths of ocean floor. In the process, they've smothered shellfish and plants, making life for lobsters and other native sea creatures that much harder.
