Conifer Forests
Expansive coniferous forests give Washington its nickname – the Evergreen State. They also have provided an economic base for much of the last 100 years, particularly for many rural communities. As the amount of old-growth has decreased over the decades, concern about the fate of old-growth dependent species, including the Northern Spotted Owl and Marbled Murrelet, has increased.
