Land Use Planning in Virginia
In Virginia, local governing bodies (municipal, county, township, city, or otherwise) derive their authority to engage in comprehensive land use planning and to promulgate land use ordinances (e.g., zoning) from the Virginia state government. The state grants this authority to localities statutorily through VA. CODE ANN. §§ 15.2-2200 to 2238.
