Buffalo Mountain Natural Area Preserve
The combination of 3,971 feet of elevation, wind-exposed openings at the summit, and magnesium rich soils make Buffalo Mountain unlike any place else in the Commonwealth. This 1,140-acre preserve provides protection to the fragile habitats of numerous rare plants and animals, both on the barren alpine peak and within lower-slope seepage wetlands. A parking area, one-mile summit trail, and spectacular 360-degree views are available at this popular day-hiking destination near the Blue Ridge Parkway in southwest Virginia.
