Description
The PA Major Greenways data set was intended to be used for statewide and regional planning purposes in the development of linear recreational trails and open space corridors for wildlife and other benefits in Pennsylvania. The PA Major Greenways data set was developed to help define a statewide network of major trails and greenways, recreational trails and open space corridors for wildlife and other benefits. Most data was collected at scales smaller than 1:50,000. Much of the land depicted in the linear data set intersects lands held in private ownership. For this reason, the data should not be displayed at scales greater than 1:200,000. The trails in the data set include those for hiking, biking, equestrian, canoeing, off-highway vehicles or some combination of these and other uses. Some trails are nationally designated hiking trails. Others are state designated routes. The data set should not be used for detailed engineering and feasibility studies.

How you might make use of this data layer
Greenways provide opportunities to protect and manage wildlife, forests and ecological systems. Greenways can become corridors connecting natural areas, making it possible for more varieties of plants to grow and for wildlife to access water and food by traveling along the greenway.
