Located in Holland, Michigan, the Holland Board of Public Works (HBPW) is home to a gas-fired power plant. The site’s Holland Energy Park program is located on a 26-acre wetland that will eventually connect the Outdoor Discovery Center Macatawa Greenway system to the Windmill Island Gardens. Beginning in March 2015, HBPW began to rehabilitate the wetland with the goal of creating a high-quality natural area for humans and wildlife. The project began with the removal of several homes and businesses from the site to provide a substantial buffer around the wetland, followed by the removal of over 60 tons of fill and household debris. Invasive plants were removed in accordance with the Macatawa Greenway system, which utilizes Integrated Pest Management (IPM), burning and targeted herbicide use. Currently, soil erosion controls are used to protect the wetland from runoff while vegetated areas around the wetland are left undisturbed. Native grasses have been planted in disturbed areas, and bird and bat boxes were placed throughout the wetland. A unique project that will improve the wetland’s health, increase wildlife habitat and encourage community relations, the Holland Energy Park Wetland was recently recognized by the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI) with their Envision Platinum award.
