Goals and Targets

Primary Motivations:

• Conservation Mission
  This work fits well with the mission of the City of Eugene's Natural Areas and Urban Forestry Section which includes: 1) Protecting and restoring ecological functions and native biodiversity and 2) advancing and stewarding interconnected systems of natural areas, trees, trails and clean waters.

Primary Goals:

• Treat non-native invasive plants, including shining geranium (Geranium lucidum), false brome (Brachypodium sylvaticum), Scotch broom (Cytisus scoparius), blackberry (Rubus armeniacus, R. laciniatus), English ivy (Hedera helix), English holly (Ilex aquifolium), cultivated pear (Pyrus communis), and Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense) first in and around areas identified for thinning and access, and second throughout the project area for two years following thinning.
  Progress: Some progress has been made. This will be an on-going management need.
• Restore the physical structure of oak woodland and savanna. During the dry season, late summer/early fall, we will remove fir trees, invasives, and dense, smaller oaks to achieve stand canopies between 30-70 -percent cover for oak woodlands and less than 30 percent cover for oak savanna.
  Progress: We have made progress towards this goal. We successfully implemented thinning to reach coverage resembling oak woodlands.
• Enhance the physical structure of conifer woodland. We will remove Douglas fir and big-leaf maple trees and invasive shrubs and trees to open the canopy and allow more light to reach native understory shrubs, trees, and herbaceous ground cover. Retaining a canopy with at least 40, and more likely closer to 75- percent cover, we will restore historic dry conifer woodland conditions.
  Progress: We thinned the conifer forest under this summer's project. Approximately 1/3 of the existing trees were removed, focusing on creating gaps or cluster openings, not consistent coverage across the habitat.

Monitoring Activities
City staff will monitor the site regularly to identify regrowth of non-native plants and invasive native plants and treat appropriately. Future monitoring/site visits will inform future restoration efforts.
